Gosar’s Latest Lie: Backtracks on Support of Tax Hike for Working Families

PRESCOTT, AZ – Just days before Election Day in District One, Paul Gosar (R-Wall Street) is getting even more desperate. He’s not just lying [link] about Ann’s record of service to Greater Arizona [link] – he’s also trying to backtrack on his own support of tax hikes for working families.

Asked about his opinions of the flat or Fair Tax, Gosar told Brahm Resnik of 12 News that “we can all agree that the progressive tax system is broken, and what we have to do is bring better minds together to adjudicate a system or options that should be shared with the American people to choose.” Asked if he had strong feelings one way or the other, Gosar replied “No.”

But “no” hasn’t always been his answer.

Back in June, Gosar indicated on a Center for Arizona Policy candidate questionnaire that he supports “replacing the current federal tax code with a flat tax or national sales tax.” [PDF]

The national sales tax would shift an even greater burden onto our middle class families, forcing Arizonans to pay 23% more for basic necessities like food, gas and prescription drugs. Some working families would see a tax raise of over $6,000 per year.

The flat tax would raise taxes on 95% of Americans – and they would end up paying an average of $2,887 more in federal taxes every year. [Citizens for Tax Justice]

But unsurprisingly, millionaire tax dodger Paul Gosar would pay less in taxes himself under either proposal. Is that the kind of support our working families need in a tough economic time?

“Paul Gosar has doubts about the minimum wage, and he wants to raise our taxes and cut his own. No wonder he’s trying to cover his tracks – who’s going to vote for someone more interested in serving himself than the district?” said Kirkpatrick campaign manager Carmen Gallus. “What you don’t know about Paul Gosar will hurt you – fortunately, people are learning more and more about him, and they’re putting their full support behind Ann Kirkpatrick.”
